SCDJC Position Paper on UNRWA

Sarasota County Democratic Jewish Caucus Position Paper on the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East)

Did you know this about Palestinian refugees?

U.N. refugee assistance has been the responsibility of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It has been successful in providing humanitarian assistance and resettlement for refugees throughout the world. All except Palestinians.

Palestinians have been treated differently. The creation of UNRWA in 1950 was theoretically set up as a new “temporary” agency of the U.N. that would assist and resettle the 711,000 refugees that fled Israel during the War Of Independence and immediately following the establishment of the State of Israel. The problem is that UNRWA has never resettled those refugees, but instead, has kept them living in poor conditions for 70 years in and around 58 camps in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza. Why? So that they and their inflated number of descendants could be used as political pawns in a campaign to destroy Israel as a Jewish state and demand the “right of return” for the now 7 million Palestinians under their supervision. Sadly, they have suffered because of this corrupt and misguided policy.

Compare that to the Jews who were displaced from Arab lands who have all been resettled in Israel, the U.S., Europe, and throughout the world.

UNRWA has aided and abetted the goals of extremists and terrorists. UNRWA staff was involved in the formation of the PLO in 1964 despite prohibitions on political activities and to this day supports the terrorist group Hamas. Terrorists have housed combatants in UNRWA camps, and have stored weapons and equipment with the knowledge of UNRWA staff.

UNRWA also:

*Utilized ambulances to assist Hamas combatants

*Allowed Hamas to control UNRWA staff unions

*Have used textbooks that promote anti-Israel and anti-Semitic programs to indoctrinate youth

*UNRWA textbooks do not recognize or show Israel on maps or as part of geography lessons

*Gaza and the West Bank are identified as “the two parts of the homeland”

This is something that will be an issue that the new Biden Administration will need to address.
